Re-post from earlier since deleted by mistake due to slippery fingers. I've been working abroad intermittently during the last 2 years from 2020. Turkey - 2 months Egypt - 2 months Mexico - 2 months Armenia - 1 month Bolivia - 2 months Peru - 1 month Uganda - 3 weeks Rwanda - 2 weeks Indonesia - 2 months Cambodia - 2 weeks Headed next to a few countries in LATAM, Africa or Europe. 34+ Speak intermediate Spanish - all learnt during the past 1 year - reasonable to understand songs or movies. Travel with my 38l mutant osprey backpack + 22l talon daypack + dual sim smartphone + laptop + outdoors/dive gear. The dual SIM is useful when I take a local data connection. Like to spend sufficient time in a country to be able to see everything, experience the country as a local and do more than the traditional touristy things. Almost always end the trip with some local souvenirs for friends/family back home. Am reasonably generous and tip well + contribute to the local economies with purchases etc. Stay in 3/4/5 star hotels and self-drive/fly when I can. Good hotels help with regular cleaning, fast wifi and the staff don't ask questions when bringing local women back to my room for fun. Usually setup base in a cheap 3-star hotel in the capital to dump my gear and heavy backpack, while using the daypack for 3-4 days to other places. Keep a list of places, activities to do within a country in excel. Am a fairly impulsive traveler - usually make decisions to go to a country and book tickets/hotels 1-2 days before my flight. Travel inspirations are from Jack Reacher (responsibility-free travel), Michael Palin (amazing journeys), movies/books/songs I've come across for various places and generally having the freedom to do whatever I want, when I want. Average budget in a country - $4K-$7K/country including airfare, hotel, food, activities etc. Am solo. Divide my day in 3 parts roughly - 8 hours for work, 8 hours for travel + play, 8 hours for rest, downtime, errands, gym etc Lots of amazing memories, experiences, being a part of history which I would never have had otherwise - seeing the Pyramids by moonlight (was a full moon then) since I was the only tourist in Giza for several months, seeing the street protests in Istanbul while the Hagia Sophia was changed from a church to a mosque, covering 50+ miles in 2 days to avoid the Congolese militia who had started firefights along the Ugandan border when I was climbing a difficult mountain etc. Will post on other topics like work, immigration, relationships and money in separate posts. Will not mention specifics of my profile for obvious reasons #travel #ama
How much is body count and how you are filing taxes?
Where did you get laid the most? Also, ethnicity? Non-Caucasian isn't specific enough.
Equally across the places - LATAM tends to be kinda demanding, Asia was more GFE, Africa was mostly backpackers. I tend to repeat with a person for 3-4 times while within the country, so I balance quality with quantity. Will not provide specifics on ethnicity beyond what I've said.
Did you let your employer know beforehand and did you work US time?
they did not ask, i did not tell. yes, i worked US times.
“Don’t ask don’t tell” is back in action
You work at Airbnb yet you stay at hotels?
Dont want my employer finding out my travel history since reviews for my bookings on Airbnb get shown on my internal company profile page Besides hotel staff don't ask questions for bringing women back to my room. I shudder to think what would happen if an Airbnb host mentioned my nocturnal activities on my post trip review.
i look at hotel reviews on booking.com before hand to see if previous guests have commented about the wifi. usually hotels with a rating 8.5+ on booking.com have had good wifi. sometimes, i call the hotel and the receptionist for the wifi speed before i book - 3/4/5 hotels have good customer service and respond well when i do. i usually work from my room or through my phone when traveling within a specific city. most work is slack convos which can be done through phone, while document preparation, meetings i leave for when im back in my room in front of my laptop.
Do you maintain an address in the US, what do you do for mail? I assume you pay taxes as though you are living in the US, right? I think I might try this after cliff vest and I don't care if they fire me. Was planning on quitting to travel for 6-12 months anyways.
This guy fucks, am I right?
literally and figuratively.
I absolutely mean this sincerely: congrats on all the smashing. Have fun. Really nice way you've set yourself up.
How do you meet people and make friends in a new country alone?
usually during activities or while doing normal day-to-day stuff. i just go with the flow and let it happen - not a big fan of online meetings.
This Is amazing! Which was your favorite place? How did you meet new people with all the covid restrictions?
Egypt was my favorite - tons of history (ancient + contemporary), delicious food, low COL, really friendly people, intermixing of various cultures/civilizations across the years. Bureaucracy is a bit of pain like most Asian/Arab countries, but foreigners/ajnaabis are relatively immune as the officials treat us nicely. I usually met people online or during my activities. Didn't specifically go looking to meet people - just let it happen naturally :)
